Special status for Bihar

Special status for Bihar

Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and Uttarakhand  have been granted special category status.

According to the thirteenth Finance Commission, "Special category" states are usually those with,  "hilly terrain, sparsely populated habitation and high transport costs leading to high delivery cost of public services." For such states, in the past, 90 per cent of Central assistance was treated as a grant, the remaining 10 per cent as a loan.

Nitish Kumar's Adhikar rally in Delhi was an effort to seek the special status for the state, so that there can be more investment in Bihar. Bihar is  a resource rich state, though it lost all mines to Jharkhand, but it still geographically well located state. The problem of the state may be due to bad governanace of yesteryears, but Nitish is in chair for quite some time and if he is aspiring something big, least that he can do is to compete in development with Gujrat
