Anti Rape Bill

Anti Rape Bill, which was to replace the ordinance before 22 Marh 2013 , was referred to EGOM headed by Chidambaram, since the Cabinet could not agree on its key provision, especially lowering the age of consent for  sex from 18 to 16 years.

Delhi High Court ruling in 2012 has ruled that a muslim girl can marry once she attains puberty( which comes as early as 12-13 these days0 . So fixing the age of consent at 16 could imply that any marriage below that age would be a rape.while Japan has age of consent as 13, Italy and Germany 14, China, England,Russia, Canada, Australia , USA have 16 as minimum age of consent.

The protection of children from sexual offence bill 2012 also had considered the issue while fixing the age to 18.

The EGOM comprises Ashwani Kumar, Krishna Tirath, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid and Social Justice Minister Kumari Selja.

In case no headway is made, the bill may be referred to select commitee and brouhgt in next session of parliament.
