The Mahakali Treaty

The Mahakali Treaty. It was signed in February 1996 between India and Nepal. The treaty pertains to sharing of  water  of Mahakali river. Treaty covers the Sarada Barrage, the Tanakpur Barrage and the proposed Pancheswar project,  according to which, equal sizes of underground power house i.e. of 3240MW will be constructed on each side of Mahakali river in India and Nepal. Moreover, the project will provide for regulated water for irrigation to a vast area of agricultural land both in Nepal and India along with benefit of flood control at downstream.
