Security Council adopted resolution1996 ( 2011). It was based on the assessment that South Sudan continued to face such such situation which could be a grave threat to international peace and security in the region.
The Security Council thus established United Nations Mission in South Sudan ( UNMISS) to consolidate peace and security and to help establish conditions for development.
