A Jew married to Indian Parsi, Ruth spent 25 years in Delhi. She is the only person to win both an Oscar and a Booker prize.'A Room with a View' and 'Howards End', both adapted from Edwardian-era novels by E M Forster got her academy awards. 'Heat and Dust', won her the Booker in 1975. India was the inspiration for many of her stories and "A Lovesong for India," was her last story , published in 2011.
She died at 85 on 3 April 2013.
