World Polio Day

World Polio Day. 24 October is observed as World Polio Day.The day was established by Rotary International over a decade ago to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk.
Jonas Salk led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis. He use inactivated(dead) poliovirus vaccine .
Subsequently widespread use of the oral poliovirus of attenuated virus was developed by Albert Sabin.
The discovery of the vaccines led to the establishment of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in 1988. Since then, GPEI has reduced polio worldwide by 99%.
In 2012, transmission of indigenous wild poliovirus have been found to continue in Nigeria, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
