Ladakh. Ladakh means ' Land of Passes'. It is also known by many other names like 'roof of the world', 'Kanchanpa meaning land of snow' ' Land of Gompas' . it also large number of Buddhists monasteries called Gompa.
Ladakh became a part of India in 1947. It is a part of J&K , which has three completely different regions-Vale of Kashmir( predominantly Muslims) , Jammu regions with Hindu majority and Ladakh with a majority of Buddhist population. Ladakh is completely barren and mostly inaccessible. a large network of black top and all weather/ fair weather roads have come up after Independence, mostly to cater for requirement of maintaining lines of communication for army.. Pir Panjal ranges divide the valley form the plains/ hills of Jammu.
