Based on a mobile all weather system, it is an air defence system and also capable of intercepting and destroying short range artillery rockets and shells from 4-70 km.Israel has deployed two batteies of Iron dome recently , which may be a precautionary measure to minimise damage from any retaliation from Hezbollah or Syria.
