The United States gained control of the Bay under the 1903 Cuba-American Treaty, which granted lease for use as a coaling and naval station.. US had seized that base in 1898 and established a naval base.In 1934, both Cuba and US signed an agreement which granted lease in perpetuity.The naval base is also nicknamed GTMO or Gitmo.
