UNESCO in its 2009 report has listed 196 Indian languages/ mother tongues which are facing different levels of endangerment.Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysore is looking into protecting and preserving 502 languages / mother tongue spoken by less than 10,000 person, for the 12th Five Year Plan period.
