Ukraine

President Viktor Yanukovych's refusal to sign an agreement establishing closer cooperation

with the EU has created deep tensions in Ukraine. Whether to face east ( Russia) or  west (

EU), is the great struggle which is going on currently in Ukraine.

Western Ukraine has a deep distrust of Russia. It  had not come under USSR until world war II.

Ukranian consider themselves part of Europe. Most of the anti -government protest is coming

from this part only. capital Kiev is also located in the Ukrainian speaking western part. eastern

part of the country is Russian speaking and they are forming core of the pro -governmental

protests. Russia has promised trade concessions , cheaper gas prices ans is dangling carrots

of loans if Ukraine stays away from Euro.

Both the the pro and anti government protest have gone so far peacefully but situation may turn

catastrophic, if not handled properly. Protests on the street depict unusual picture of split.
