Established in 2002, at a cost of $ 1 Billion, it was used by the US  as a detention and interrogation centre for prisoners captured worldwide in America's global War on terror.

The camp is in news , when about 100 detainees are on hunger strike and being given enteral feed.The prisoners are protesting against their extrajudicial incarceration for indefinte period.

The United States gained control of the Bay under the 1903 Cuba-American Treaty, which granted lease for use as a coaling and naval station.. US had seized that base in 1898 and established a naval base.In 1934, both Cuba and US signed an agreement which granted lease in perpetuity.The naval base is also nicknamed GTMO or Gitmo.

Moscow Theatre Hostage Crisis

On 23 October 2002, about 40-5- Chechen armed rebel ( men and women) took control of   a crowded theater in Moscow. The terrorists ( masked men and women) drove through the hall by firing assault rifle and took about 850-900  hostages.

On third day,Russian special forces, Spetsnaz, pumped unknown chemical  through the ventilation system . All terrorists were killed and some 130 hostages died due to adverse reaction of the gas.

The rebels were demanding immediate withdrawl of Russian forces form Checnya and an end to second Chechen War.

Irina Yanina

Irina Yamina was the first woman of russia to be awarded the title of Hero of Russian Federation and a gold Star Medal posthumusly while fighting in Karamakhi, hotbed of radical  Islamism, in Second Chechen War in 1999.

Chechnya is located in North Caucasus. Grozny is its Capital.Checnya had gained independence after first Chechen war( 1994-96), but after Second Chechen War , it came under federal control of Russia.chechen  with good guerilla tactics kept superior Russian forces at bay in first Chechen war.  

In 1997, when Chechnya based Islamic International Brigade launched an incursion in Dagestan, Dagestani villagers did not welcome the Islamist militia as 'liberators' and  considered them as occupiers and unwelcome religious fanatics.Russian forces lauched counterattacks with tanks ( T-90 first time) Airforce firing Fuel Air Explosives( FAE).Russia used force and Grozny was recaptured in 2000. In 2003, Chechnya was integrated with Russia by a referendum, with limited autonomy. In 2009, Russia pulled out its bulk of army and ended counter-terrorism operation.

Boston bombing suspects are ethnically Chechen.

Dagestan means a land (stan) of mountains (Dagh). Located on southernmost part of Russia and Caspian Sea on it s East, it is Russia's most ethnically diverse Russian Republic.

Makhachakala is its Capital.The city was in news because parents of Boston Bombing suspects live here.today also, there was an explosion in busy street of Makhachakala, which killed two people. Last week, three police persons were killed in Dagestan, when they came under fire. Tamerlan, Boston Bombing suspect who was killed in a shootout, had paid a long visit to Dagestan last year. Insurgents frequently mount attack on Police and security forces in this area.
